The St Clair West Laneway Suite epitomizes simplicity, minimalism and holistic design. The long-time owners of this property envisioned a laneway suite that would add value to their lot and provide a unique, separate living space for a close family friend. As such, the proposed design revolves around priorities associated with energy efficiency, spacial comfort, and access to outdoor space, both visually and physically. This 950 square foot suite challenges the status quo by placing bedrooms at the lower level and reserving the large open concept second floor for a dramatic light-filled living space.
By strategically setting back the building from the South property line, the proposal harvests daylight from three sides and frames views to the Toronto skyline. Our team worked closely with the homeowners to develop a scheme that would provide ample privacy toward the laneway and neighbouring properties, while allowing the upper living space to be bathed in daylight. The building’s geometry is derived from the functional need for an occasional parking pad adjacent the laneway and a strong desire for an accessible green roof that would function as a private garden.
This elegant two-storey suite illustrates how the intangible benefits of providing outdoor space, privacy and visual connections to the surrounding can shape a contextually sensitive response that is not only desirable and comfortable, but incredibly functional as well.
