What is a Garden Suite?

Garden suites are similar in form and function to laneway homes in that they are generally located in the rear yard of detached houses, semi-detached houses, townhouses or other low-rise properties. However, Garden Suites do NOT have to abut a laneway, making them much more flexible for lots and neighbourhoods in the City. 

The City of Toronto has now approved as-of-right zoning by-laws for Garden suites on residential properties to extend the permissions for homeowners to build any kind of detached secondary dwelling on their property. 

At LanewayHomesToronto.ca, we are excited about this new housing type that will essentially create 10 times more potential for the building of residential lots in city neighbourhoods. While it will not single-handedly solve Toronto’s housing shortage, it will create the potential for thousands of new, low cost rental units in previously unaffordable, yet desirable areas of the City.
